Old Fortress

Old Fortress

The Old Fortress of Corfu is built on a rocky peninsula with two hills and is located east of the Old Town.

The Old Fortress began to be fortified in the 6th century by the ruins of the Old Town, the ancient city destroyed by the Goths, because survivors had to find a place to live. The Old Fortress was the city of Corfu until the 15th century.

The fortress houses the historical archive with over 6 centuries of history, the Byzantine collection of Byzantine sculptures and icons, and also has a public library.
